CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

This course covers two fundamental characterization techniques i.e. XRD and XPS. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) is a rapid analytical technique primarily used for phase identification of a crystalline material and can provide information on unit cell dimensions. While X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS or ESCA) is a surface-sensitive quantitative spectroscopic technique that measures the elemental composition, chemical state and electronic state of the elements that exist within a material. The binding energy of the photoelectron is used for identification of an element and its chemical state.

The course component comprises of online lecture series. An overview of the instrumentation and some practical aspects of the instrument will be presented. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of XPS data will be introduced during the course. Case studies for applications in various fields such as catalysis, microelectronics, coatings, adhesives, and oxides will be presented.
