COURSE SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

Circular economy can be defined as a regenerative system in which resource use and waste production, emissions and energy waste are minimized by slowing, reducing and closing the energy and material cycles. This can be achieved through durable design, maintenance, repair, reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishing and recycling within the industrial system. Due to its promising potential for environmental and business sustainability, the concept of circular economy has been adopted by many industries. This introductory course will cover the aspect of man-made ecosystem in industry and circular economy potentials. Specific ecosystem from palm oil industry will be discussed as a case study.

COURSE CONTENT

  • Introduction to Environmental Engineering, Issues and Regulations.
  • Man-made Industrial Ecosystem and Circular Economy.
  • Malaysian Environmental laws- Discharged limits.
  • Palm oil industry- Introduction, Processes, Products and By-products, Treatment and By-products Utilization.

WHO SHOULD JOIN US TO :

  • Industrial players primarily dealing with biomass waste.
  • Researchers and students in environmental field.
  • Community leaders and residents who want to introduce sustainable living concept at home.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Comprehend the environmental impact and potential of industrial by- products.
  • Generate ideas for by-products utilization as an alternative treatment method while producing value-added products.

OUR TRAINERS

1. Dr Muhammad Rashid Shamsuddin

Prior to teaching, Dr Shamsuddin worked in various engineering industries in the Middle East, Malaysia and New Zealand in 1) O&G specializing in pipeline construction, pressure testing and flushing as well as waste water treatment 2) Plant design, construction, M&E installation and commissioning 3) RnD in biomaterials and waste conversion technology and 4) Production and optimization process in timber industry. He graduated with a PhD degree in Materials and Processing from theUniversity of Waikato, New Zealand. His PhD research focused onrecovering protein from abattoir waste water using clay adsorption. Novelty of this work lies on the dual purpose of the process where clay surface modification and waste water treatment can be done simultaneously. The modified clay was successfully utilized as a reinforcement material in bio- based polymer while the waste water required less treatment prior to disposal. The research provides an avenue for abattoir plants to save coston the waste water treatment and produce a value-added product from what is essentially a waste. As an academic, he currently involves actively in lecturing and RnD inChemical Engineering Department. His teaching subjects include Thermodynamics, Materials Science & Engineering, Environmental Chemical Engineering, Energy & Plant Utilities System, HSE and Workplace Safety in Malaysia. His active consultancy and research project include biogas and biofertilizer from waste sources, composting Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) waste of palm oil into high value fertilizer, geopolymer as green material and synthesis of various adsorbents for waste water treatment.

2. Dr Razam Abd Latip

Dr Razam Abd Latip is a Principal Engineer with a doctorate (PhD) in Food and Enzyme Biotechnology, M.Sc in Bioprocess Engineering from University Putra Malaysia and Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) from University Technology Malaysia.  He has been working with Sime Darby Research Sdn Bhd for the past 28 years in various positions. His main responsibility includes new product and technology development, technical advisory for palm oil processing and technical marketing for palm oil products. He has published more than 10 papers and obtain 6 patents on palm oil processing and palm oil products application. He is Industry Advisory Panel for UTM, UMP and USM.
