CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

For the past three decades, Islamic capital market is one of the fastest growing areas of international finance. Interest in Islamic capital market has been increasingly demanded. Islamic capital market (ICM) market transactions are carried out in ways that do not conflict with the conscience of Muslims and the religion of Islam. There are three branches of important area of ICM which is equity, sukuk and derivative market. Sukuk is similar to a bond in a away but is participative and risk sharing in nature and is a booming market to date, which have progressed rapidly in a global economic environment. This module is designed in such a manner to provide the participants with hands on experience on Sukuk structuring, issues and challenges pertaining to sukuk. The training will also facilitate the participants with knowledge of shariah principle used in issuing sukuk.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of shariah transaction and the element of Riba, Gharar and Maysir in capital investment.
  • Identify what are the components in Islamic capital market which includes debt capital market covering Islamic securities (sukuk).
  • Describe the difference between the conventional bond and Sukuk.
  • Identify the features of Islamic securities (sukuk) and to apply wherever applicable the Shariah parameters and procedures.

1. Mr Zairulnizad Shahrim 

Zairulnizad Shahrim has over 20 years of experience in the Islamic capital market & investment banking, Islamic financial services and Islamic funds management industry. He has been involved in extensive number of Islamic syndications and capital markets transactions which includes Sukuk, private equity and venture capital, unit trust funds, Islamic REITs, derivatives and structured products and many more issued by corporates, Government as well as GLCs. Zairulnizad graduated from University of Nottingham, United Kingdom with a Masters in Finance and Investment. He is a British Council Chevening and Securities Commission of Malaysia Scholar. He holds the Capital Markets Services Representative’s License for the regulated activity of Funds Management, license as a Unit Trust Consultant and Certified Islamic Financial Planner.


2. Dr. Muhammad Pisol Mat Isa (UTP)

Dr. Muhammad Pisol Bin Mat Isa is a Malaysian, a senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. He received his PhD from Universiti Malaya in Islamic finance, prior to his PhD, he was a graduate of al-Azhar University in Islamic Theology and Master degree from Universiti Malaya in Islamic Political Thought, his area of interest covers Islamic finance, fiqh Muamalat, Islamic Economics, Islamic microfinance, Islamic civilization and Islamic thought. He is currently a Shariah Committee at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Malaysia and he is registered Shariah advisor at Security Commission Malaysia. His current research is “Risk Mitigation Model of Islamic Equity Financing: Malaysia and Indonesia” in collaboration with Universitas Muhammadiah Purwokerto Indonesia.
