COURSE SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

In Malaysia, the British Standard (BS) has been the main source of structural design code. However, since 2010, the design code has been withdrawn and is progressively replaced by Eurocode 2.In line with the latest amendment of Uniform Building By Laws (UBBL), relevant authorities have made compulsory the full implementation for adoption of Eurocode 2 (EC2) by practicing engineers in the industry for submission purposes.

To prepare local structural engineering practitioners for the adoption of the Eurocodes in the design of reinforced concrete building structures, this 1-day course will focus on analysis and design of reinforced concrete beams in accordance with the requirements of EC2.

  • Introduction to Eurocode 2.
  • Durability, Materials and Actions. 
  • Structural analysis:
    • Load combination and arrangement. 
    • Linear analysis.
    • Redistribution of moments.
  • Flexural design: 
    • Failure mode.
    • Bending resistance.
    • Bending design. 
  • Shear design
    • Failure mode, 
    • Shear resistance.
    • Shear design.
  • Design for Torsion: 
    • Failure mode.
    • Torsion resistance.
    • Torsion design.
  • Detailing reinforced concrete: 
    • Bar spacing.
    • Anchorage.
    • Lap splicing
  • Serviceability Limit state design: 
    • Deflection.
    • Crack width.


OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the serviceability limit state and durability requirements based on the Eurocode 2 standard
  • Design rectangular and flanged reinforced concrete beams according to Eurocode 2 requirements: flexure, shear and torsion
  • Prepare detailing RC beams to Eurocode 2

1. Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Bashar S. Mohammed

Ir Dr. Bashar S. Mohammed, CEng, FICE is an Associate Professor in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia. Ir. Dr Bashar has over 25 years of professional structural engineering experience as educator, researcher, and structural engineer in various parts of the world. He has published more than 200 peers refereed research papers. Ir Dr Bashar is the author of the text book entitled “Design of Reinforced Concrete Elements to Eurocode 2” which has been received The National Book Award, Yayasan Pembangunan Buku Negara, SERBA DINAMIK 2018 and he is also recipient Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Grant entitled “The Impact of Higher Level Thinking On Students' Achievement Toward Reinforced Concrete Design Course”. Ir Dr. Bashar is currently the Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, UTP and also the president of Mygeopolymer Society, Malaysia.
