COURSE SUMMARY
INTRODUCTION
Malaysia is a country that operates increasingly in an active seismic region and major faults such as the intracrustal faults in Kinabalu has influenced the design of RC structures in the region. Pulau Pinang has also seen a rise in seismic activity resulting in impact to maintenance of old structures. This course will aim to guide and provide knowledge on the application and design of seismic / earthquake standards in the design and consideration of facilities in Malaysia including necessary strategies for retrofitting that can be considered in such design requirements.
WHO SHOULD JOIN US TO :
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Develop understanding on mitigation strategies for seismic retrofitting in existing structures.
1. Professor Ir Dr Mohd Shahir Liew
Professor Shahir aspires for a better tomorrow in Malaysia through the approach of sustained growth in niche capabilities and high-end knowledge areas. He believes that these are crucial for the country to reach developed nation status and strongly advocates for the scientific and engineering community to always add cutting edge dimensions to their set of capabilities and competencies.
Professor Shahir throughout his career has spearheaded several strategic initiatives in the area of competency development including being one of the pioneering groups in Malaysia to develop wind engineering competencies and was the Chairman of the National Standards MS1553 Wind Code in 1999. In this time in the Malaysian Oil and Gas Services Council (MOGSC), he has served as the Chairman of the Competency and Training Working Group identifying critical industry gaps in the oil and gas industry. His continued service as the Honourary Secretary has also seen his leading participation in the Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF) for the National Occupational Skill Standard (NOSS) and Sectorial Training Committee (STC-17). He is also the current Fellow of the Energy Institute Malaysia and is closely overlooking the development of niche professional accreditation tracks in Malaysia for engineers in the energy sector.
Prof Ir Dr Shahir Liew graduated from Texas Tech University with a B.Sc in Civil Engineering and Ph.D in Structural Dynamics. He is a Professional Engineer with the State of Texas and an Asean Engineer. In 2016, he became a Fellow Chartered Engineer (UK). After spending 23 years in the industry as consulting professional engineer in the USA and Asian countries, he joined UTP in 2009 as an Associate Professor. He has been the Head of Offshore Engineering Center since 2011, winning approximately RM8.5m research grants. He is currently active in engaging the industries, including Production Sharing Contractors and Tier 2 oil and gas companies. He has held several exco positions, nationally and internationally, with the NGOs and is instrumental in developing young engineers and researchers. He is committed to ensure the relevance of research and its application for the benefit of the industry and society as a whole.
Prof. Dr. Azlan Adnan current position as Head, Engineering Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Research (e-SEER) and Professor of Structural Earthquake Engineering at the Structural and Material Department, School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Prof. Ir. Dr. Azlan Bin Adnan is a professional engineer under the Board of Engineers Malaysia. He pursued his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering at California State University, Long Beach and his M.Sc. in Structural Engineering at UTM. His Ph.D. Degree was obtained through a joint program between UTM and Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA. He is a member of several international associations such as the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) of United States and the Seismological Society of America (SSA) and serving as Malaysian Seismic Expert for International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), Paris, France, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna, Austria and Global Earthquake Model (GEM), Pavia, Italy. Currently, he is serving as the Vice President of Malaysian Structural Steel Association (MSSA).
Dr. Azlan has received five international and many national awards. He received awards for his invention, “Digital Triaxial Seismo Accelerograph using Single Mass and Hall Sensors (SEER-SAG)”; a gold medal in the 2005, 33rd International Exhibition on New Techniques, Innovation and Product at Geneva, Switzerland, and a bronze medal in the IENA 2004, International Trade Fair “Ideas-Inventions-New Products” at Nuremberg, Germany. His latest inventions of SEER-SAC and SEER-iBLOCK received two gold medals and “Innovation of the Year Award” at British Invention Show (BIS2013) in London.
3. Dr Ir Lim Eu Shawn
