CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

Programmable logic controllers (PLC) is a heart of modern automation systems. The application ranges from electro-mechanical systems to large process plants. This course is directed at users with engineering, computer sciences or applied sciences background in the fields of operation, maintenance, assembly, configuring, and commissioning of PLCs. Engineering personnel that involve in education and training of PLCs in higher institutions will also find benefit by attending this course.

Through a general approach, this course focuses mainly on the PLC hardware and software features and program development. Some selected practical exercises on problems solving will be provided. Through ‘learning-by-doing’, the participants should be able to develop an automated control system, consisting of PLC and ladder support software, to the control and monitoring of an industrial or manufacturing process.

The practical activities involve some in-depth engineering study or design. Participants will be exposed on developing a ladder diagram for a system, consisting of the various necessary instructions, e.g. input, output, holding relays, timers, counters, and arithmetic instructions. Participants will be tested on designing a system to control an industrial process, e.g. a conveyor belt system, consisting of various actuators, electric DC motor, electro-pneumatic actuators, sensors, etc., to perform specific tasks.

COURSE CONTENT
  • Overview on PLC programming
  • Develop sequential control systems via IEC61131-3 standard graphical languages
  • Programming instructions, arithmetic and logic expressions Hands –on experience on PLC programming (Use of holding relays, timers, counters, logic equations)

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply PLC programming instructions in PLC program
  • Develop sequential control systems via graphical languages as specified in IEC61131-3 standard.
  • Develop documentation of intermediate programming skill associated with PLC applications

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • Engineers
  • Scientists
  • Technicians
  • Trainers in institutions of higher learning
