COURSE SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

This course covers on mercury management in oil and gas industry. Mercury is a very hazardous substances to environment and human health. Therefore, mercury management one of the fields in oil and gas industry that need attention. This course discusses in-depth on the proper mercury management, from the fundamental aspects, state-of the-art technologies for mercury removal, consist of cradle to grave management approach. In addition, this course also ensures enlighten the participants with the ability to familiarize with various mercury sampling and measuring techniques for removal processes.

COURSE CONTENT
Introduction to Mercury 
  • Describes fundamental of history, mercury theory, species, mercury cycle, etc.

Mercury in the Oil & Gas Industry 

  • Highlights the impact of mercury to the global O&G industry, impact of mercury to processes and plant integrity, distribution of mercury (upstream-downstream), mercury mapping, etc.

Mercury Health, Safety and Environment

  • Impact of mercury to human health (toxicity, route of entry, exposure limits), mitigation plan (decontamination of people, equipment and management), surveillance, environmental exposure limits, impact on environment (bioaccumulation, etc.), regulations.

Mercury Sampling in Various Mediums

  • Classification of mercury sampling, sample pre-treatment, sampling tools, representative approaches to sampling mercury in various mediums, handling and transportation, maximum holding times, standard methods, etc.

Mercury Measurement / Analysis

  • Measurement techniques (portable and lab equipment), type of mediums, basic equipment handling, data interpretation and validation, etc.

Mercury Removal Technology

  • Types of MRU for different streams, evaluating performance of MRU, regenerable and non-regen technology, specs and requirements, etc.

Mercury Waste Management

  • Schedule waste classification, handling of spent adsorbent/Hg contaminated waste, disposal – tracking of schedule waste.


OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the impact of mercury to the O & G industry and human health.
  • Classify mercury sampling and conduct sample pre-treatment.
  • Understand the measurement techniques for mercury removal.

OUR TRAINERS



1. Mr Amiruddin (PRSB) 

Mr Amiruddin currently working at PETRONAS Research & Scientific Services as Principal Researcher at PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd (PRSB). He graduated from Bachelors of Science in Chemistry and Bachelors of Art in Economics from Indiana University, Bloomington, USA. He had working experience as Research Chemist, Senior Researcher at Research and Scientific Services (PRSS) and Staff Research at PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd (PRSB). He had professional membership from Associate Membership of Institiut Kimia Malaysia (IKM) since 1997.


2. Mr Tengku Uzaini (PRSB) 

Mr Tengku Uzaini current position as Staff (Process R&D) department Gas Sustainability Technology, GR&T at PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd (PRSB). He had academic qualification in B.Sc (Hons) in Applied Chemistry from MARA University of Technology, Malaysia. He also involved in Corporate and Society Initiatives such as Mercury Task Force Member for PETRONAS Carigali, PETRONAS Mercury Work Group and PETRONAS Contaminants Roadmap.




3. Mr Sharizal Azam (PRSB)   

Mr Sharizal Azam current position as Staff Process Researcher at PETRONAS Research Sdn. Bhd. He had qualification in Bachelor in Biotechnology from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (National University of Malaysia) and Master in Analytical Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis form Universiti Malaya. He had plant experience in, RESAK Gas Platform, PETRONAS Penapisan Melaka Sdn. Bhd, Onshore Gas Terminal Kerteh and PETRONAS Gas Processing Plants Kerteh).


4. Dr Syamzari (PRSB) 

Dr Syamzari current position as Projest Leader at PRSB, Bangi, Integrated Molecular Management, Technology Development Program for Base Oil. He academic qualification, BEng Chemical Engineering (Hons) from UMIST, Manchester, United Kingdom, MSc Chemical Engineering, Thesis: Evaluation and Modeling of Fouling Characteristics of Petroleum Crude Oils and Crude Blends from UTP, Tronoh, Malaysia and PhD Chemistry,Thesis: Mercury Removal from Natural Gas from Queen’s University Belfast, United Kingdom. He had 18 years working experience with Petronas.




5. Professor Dr Shamsul Rahman Mohamed Kutty 

Professor Dr Shamsul Rahman Mohamed Kutty is presently a lecturer in Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, received his PhD degree from the University of Memphis, TN, USA.   He has worked with the University of PETRONAS for more than 14 years. He is popularly known as Dr. Shark due to his various involvement in theatre.  Nevertheless, throughout the years, he has been involved in research and consultancies related to wastewater treatment, biological as well as physical chemical.  Over the years, he has also been invited to give talks locally and overseas on wastewater treatment. He has obtained several research grants from MOE under ERGS, FRGS and PRGS.


6. Dr Lavania Baloo 

Dr Lavania Baloo is a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). She obtained B.Sc. (Industrial Biology) and M. Eng (Environmental Management) degrees from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and her PhD specialization is in Environmental Engineering. Dr Lavania’s research has primary focused on microbiology in environmental engineering and in water purification. She has done several studies involving biological wastewater treatment and develop agricultural waste based activated carbon using empty fruit bunch and seaweed biomass for wastewater treatment. She has in-depth skills in water quality analysis, such as the water quality index and marine water quality standard parameters that involved. She is also a member of Malaysian Water Association (MWA) professional body and has published several scientific papers in international journals.
