COURSE SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

NDT is used across industries and become a crucial aspect of quality control and ultimately health and safety. This introductory non-destructive techniques (NDT) training course provides a comprehensive understanding on the NDT technology, where tests are conducted without destroying its structure. Acoustic emission (AE) is one of the NDT technique which is being hotly debated. With advancement in health monitoring, knowledge on AE would be an advantage for anyone deal with structure monitoring in the oil and gas, manufacturing, shipping, aerospace, railroad and power plant sector. The training will mainly cover the following:

  • Overview of NDT techniques.
  • The science of AE and case study.
  • Hands-on and demonstration of established software for AE technique.

COURSE CONTENT
Topic 1
  • Defining the basic principle, fundamental, scope and future of NDT
  • Exposing current NDT techniques in various industry and its limitation
Topic 2
  • AE history and phenomenon.
  • AE fundamental and concept.
  • AE Application – anomalies detection.
  • AE advantages and drawback.

Topic 3

  • AE case study: Bridge monitoring application, aircraft monitoring and pipeline application.

Topic 4
  • Introduction to AEwin software.
  • Capability of AEwin.
  • Demonstration of AEwin.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic principle of various NDT techniques.
  • Expose the importance of NDT application and limitation.
  • Provide an overview of AE including history, phenomenon, fundamental and basic concept.

  • Enable participants to understand the AE application and anomalies.

  • Demonstrate tools and software for AE technique.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • Engineers, technicians, academia, researchers etc. that require knowledge in NDT technology.

OUR TRAINERS

1. Associate Professor Ts Dr Ahmad Kamil Bin Mahmood (UTP)

AP Ts Dr Ahmad Kamil Bin Mahmood has over thirty years of experience in various fields of Information Systems. He has taught undergraduate and postgraduate programs and managed numerous R&D and consultancy projects successfully. He had supervised 18 PhD students successfully to completion. He obtained his B.Sc. (Hons) in Actuarial Science from University of Iowa in 1986, MSc in Actuarial Science and Statistics from the same university in 1988, and PhD from Salford University, Manchester, UK in 2005. He was the Head of High-Performance Cloud Computing Centre (HPC3) at the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). His last appointment was the Dean of Faculty of Science and Information and Technology (FSIT) (2013 – 2017). Prior to that, he held the position as the Director of Mission Oriented Research (MOR) Intelligent Cities managing and coordinating various research projects granted by the industries and the government funding bodies. He has also held various important positions in the industry such as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KPerak INC (DigitalPerak) on a 2-year secondment, a state government agency promoting and implementing the knowledge economy and bridging digital divide at the state level and serving PETRONAS as an IS practitioner implementing a large scale SAP project called Dagangan Marketing & Distribution Systems (DMDS) for PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad. His current research areas are in cloud computing, e-services quality and measurement, artificial intelligence application, and knowledge management. He has published over 100 papers in these areas.

2. Dr Lukman Abdul Rahim (UTP)

He completed his PhD at Lancaster University. His current research interest is in formal verification, software and system modelling, and software architecture. Currently, his research is focusing in particular with adopting model-driven engineering and formal verification in cloud computing. Some of the projects he is working on right now are using architecture-driven modernization and model-driven engineering in deploying engineering simulation software as a cloud service, formal verification of cloud security mechanism using model checking, domain specific modelling languages for educational games. Apart from these projects, he is also involved in research projects related to system engineering and Big Data.
