CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

Sustainable and renewable energy development has entered a new era with the potential of producing biofuel from microbes. Specifically, microalgae have been recognized as the third generation of biofuel production and could potentially replace fossil fuel in the future. This short course provides basic learning about microalgae cultivation, cell disruption & harvesting, and conversion of microalgae to biofuel.

OUR TRAINERS

1. Dr. Lam Man Kee (UTP)

Dr. Lam Man Kee is currently a senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering (Renewable Energy) from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2014.  His research interests are in microalgae cultivation, biomass & biodiesel production, heterogeneous catalyst development, life cycle energy assessment and social-economic impact of biofuel. He has more than 9 years experiences in growing microalgae for biofuel production, as well as consultancy project with industry related to algae research. Apparently, he has published more than 100 papers in ISI/SCOPUS-indexed journals with total citations of 3882 and H-index of 29 (SCOPUS database, March 2021). He is currently serving as the Deputy Editor of International Journal of Biomass & Renewables (UTP Press) and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Advanced Chemical Engineering (Omics International). He also had delivered several short courses to the academic and industrial, such as “Biomass to Fuels & Chemicals”, “Reaction Engineering and LCA for Biomass Conversion”, “Academic Paper Writing in the Field of Chemical Engineering, Biomass and Biofuel”, “Cultivation of Microalgae and Larvae for Biofuel Production” and “Writing and Publishing in High Impact Journal: Tricks & Tips”.

2. Ts. Dr. Ho Yeek-Chia

Ts. Dr. Ho Yeek-Chia (YC) is a Programme Manager for MSc in Industrial Environmental Engineering. Also, currently, YC is a Senior Lecturer and previously Cluster Leader for Environmental Cluster (2018-2020) in Civil & Environmental Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). Nonetheless, YC is currently a Secretary in International Water Association (IWA) for Design, Operation and Maintenance of Drinking Water Treatment Plants. YC involves in research projects on renewable energy, algae harvesting, water and wastewater treatments, and life cycle assessment. YC has published several works in invited review papers, invited book chapters, international conference papers and international indexed journal papers, including Bioresource Technology from Elsevier, Scientific Reports from Nature Research and a few to name. Also, YC has won a few national awards in publications and international awards for her research works, two patents and two trademarks were filed. Recently, she has been selected to be one of the invited leaders in an Innovation Fellowships programme by Royal Academy of Engineering, UK. She also conducted short courses entitled “Introduction to Environmental Engineering”, “Cultivation of Microalgae and Larvae for Biofuel Production”, and “Writing and Publishing in High Impact Journal: Tricks & Tips”. Her H-index now is 11.

3. Dr. Lim Jun Wei (UTP)

ChM. Dr. LIM JUN WEI (MRSC) was conferred with the Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Chemistry from Universiti Sains Malaysia in year 2009. He later received his Ph.D. qualification in Environmental Chemistry from the same university in year 2013. Currently, he is affiliated with the Department of Fundamental and Applied Sciences, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, serving as the Senior Lecturer and Cluster Head of Applied Chemistry program. His major research interests are insect-based biological compounds, bioremediation of solid wastes and wastewaters and microbial biofuels. Accordingly, he has published more than 200 research papers inclusive of book chapters of late. In terms of professional associations, he is the Member of The Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) at international level and Professional Chemist registered with Institut Kimia Malaysia at national level.
