CONTENT SUMMARY
INTRODUCTION
Programmable logic controllers (PLC) is a heart of modern automation systems. The application ranges from electro-mechanical systems to large process plants. This course is directed at new users with engineering, computer sciences or applied sciences background with no prior knowledge of PLCs. The going to be trainers of PLCs in higher institutions will also find benefit by attending this course.
This course focuses mainly on the fundamental knowledge of PLC hardware and software features and program development for the first-time user. Through ‘learning-by-doing’, the participants should be able to develop a program and would be exposed to input and output devices wiring and programming software. Some selected practical exercises on problems solving will be provided.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Associate Professor Dr Nordin Saad (UTP)
Dr Nordin Saad is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. He obtained a B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Kansas State University USA, a M.Sc. in Power Electronics Engineering from Loughborough University UK, and a PhD in Control and Systems Engineering from The University of Sheffield UK. He was the Head, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the current university from 1998 to 2000, having joined the University in 1997. He was appointed as Cluster leader for the Industrial Automation and Control from 2005 to 2012, and subsequently Co-Cluster leader for the Power-Control and Instrumentation from 2013 to 2014. He had also been a member of the SKG14 (Petronas Instrument Skill Group 14) from 2008 to 2012. He was Head, Centre for Smart Grid Energy Research from 2018 to 2020. There is a total of seven Ph.D.s’ and four M.Sc.s’ (by research) that had graduated under his supervision. He had authored and co-authored four books and more about 150 journals, transactions, book chapters and technical papers and received a number of best paper awards at international conferences for the research conducted by his team. His research work encompasses some of the issues that include computer/embedded systems/PLC control of processes, instrumentation and control of process plant facilities, condition monitoring and diagnostic of machines, power electronic converters for high power transmissions, electrical drives control and smart electrical energy systems, and Automation and Industry 4.0. He is a Chartered Engineer registered under the Engineering Council United Kingdom, a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (SMIEEE) USA, and a member of the Institute of Measurement and Control (MInstMC) UK.
2. Associate Professor Ir Dr Idris Ismail (UTP)
Ir Dr Idris Ismail is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia. He obtained a B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Wichita State University USA, a M.Sc. in Control and Systems Engineering from The University of Sheffield UK, and a PhD in Electrical & Electronic Engineering / Multiphase flow measurement from The University of Manchester UK. Prior joining UTP, he had worked for 11 years in several Petronas Operating Units such as refinery and petrol-chemical complex at Petronas Refinery Terengganu and Ethylene/Polyethylene, holding jobs as I/E engineer in project and maintenance until he became the Head of Instrumentation at Ethylene/Polyethylene. He was appointed as Head, Intelligent Systems and Advanced Control research group from 2018 to 2020. Currently, he is leading the Centre for Systems Engineering at the current university. At present, he is also a member in the SKG14-LT (Petronas Instrument Skill Group 14 - Leadership Team). His research topics includes: IoT and data analytics, plant process control, electrical & instrumentation and electrical process tomography. He is the current Chair for Education International Society of Automation (ISA), Malaysia. He is also a registered Professional Electrical Engineer with Certified Practice, as well as appointed as Assessor for Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) Malaysia.
