CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

The rapid increase of biodiesel production in Malaysia generates an excess of crude glycerol as the primary co-product which has limited application in local industries. Based on the current situation, conversion of glycerol to higher value products is an attractive alternative. Due to its unique properties, glycerol have created a versatile range of products in various industries. Some of the areas of application include food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and textile industries. As a high value chemical with a thousand uses, glycerol can produce a large number of value-added products using various routes including catalytic. This course will highlight the importance of glycerol for the synthesis of valuable chemicals and further discuss on the conversion of glycerol to value added products (monoglyceride and polyglycerols) using catalytic routes. The current progress on this topic will also be highlighted.

COURSE CONTENT
  • Glycerol as by-product of biodiesel.
  • Catalytic conversion of glycerol to monoglycerides.
  • Catalytic conversion of glycerol to polyglycerols.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • Researchers and postgraduate students.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of glycerol as raw material for chemical synthesis.
  • Have an in-depth knowledge on conversion of glycerol to value-added products via catalysis routes.

OUR TRAINERS

1. Dr Mohd Hizami Mohd Yusoff (UTP)

Dr Mohd Hizami Mohd Yusoff received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 2009 and 2012, respectively. In 2016, he was conferred with a PhD degree in Chemical Reaction Engineering from USM and appointed as a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Chemical Engineering, USM until 2018. He is currently a lecturer at Chemical Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), teaching chemical reaction engineering at undergraduate level. His research interest includes mesoporous catalyst and conversion of glycerol to value-added products via catalytic routes.

2. Dr Muhammad Ayoub (UTP)

Dr Muhammad Ayoub is a senior lecturer in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. Currently, he is working in the field of biofuel, sustainable and renewable energy, clean environment, De-NOx, CO2 capture and utilization, catalysis, biomass conversion using innovative and collaborative research methods. He has more than 70 ISI publications and more than 120 Impact Factor with citation 770 (H-index 11 and i10-index 15) and number of international conference presentation and papers. He was invited 3 times as plenary speakers in international conferences. He has been supervised more than 46 undergraduate and postgraduate students and conducting 6 projects to perform research on biofuel, CO2 solubility & utilization, biomass conversion and green catalytic technology. He is a project manager of Pak-Mill and chaired the UTP-PAKISTAN International Collaboration Workshop 2018.
