CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

Gas Conditioning Process with Advanced Simulations course covers the major technical aspects of gas conditioning process related to natural gas business chain. Main topics incorporate fundamental and intermediate knowledges to operate and design the gas conditioning process including gas separation, dehydration, sweetening and measuring system with IR 4.0 capability. This course will be resulted in an increase of the effectiveness of the personnel, reduction of operation cost and optimization of the performance of gas conditioning process.

Module 1: Overview on gas conditioning process and advanced simulation

Module 2: Introduction to Physical Separations 

  • Type of phase separators
  • Operation and design for physical separators

Module 3: Introduction to Chemical separations

  • Chemical separations (water removal, CO2 removal and Sulphur removal)
  • Technologies for chemical separations

Module 4: Absorption

  • Type of solvent
  • Operation and design for absorption process (absorption, regeneration, auxiliary processes)

Module 5 : Adsorption Process

  • Adsorption for chemical separations 
  • Adsorbent materials and processes

Module 6: Membrane Development for Gas Separation

  • Fundamental in membrane for gas separation
  • Development of membrane materials
  • Structural-properties relationship between membrane and gas separation performance

Module 7: Dehydration

  • Dehydrate and Gas hydrate formation in Flow Assurance
  • Dehydrate and Gas hydrate mitigation chemicals

Module 8: Cryogenic 

  • Type of Natural Gas Liquid 
  • Operation and design for cryogenic separation process 

Module 9: Model development on Gas Processing Unit - Hands on 

Module 10: Advanced process simulation (membrane in gas conditioning process)

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • To provide an overview of gas conditioning process and advanced simulation.
  • To provide engineering knowledge of physical and chemical separations including technologies for separations
  • To deliver the knowledge on absorption process for gas conditioning process (including type of solvent, operation and design parameters).
  • To equip the participants with in-depth knowledge on the adsorption technology which is important for separation processes.
  • To understand the principal of gas separation in different types of membranes and the effect of membrane properties on gas separation performance
  • To equip the participants with in-depth knowledge on the dehydration and gas hydrate technology which is important in flow assurance.
  • To deliver the knowledge of cryogenic process (including type of natural gas liquid, operation and design parameters).
  • To model complex process facilities and assist engineers in finding the operating conditions that will maximize the value of plant assets (without exceeding plant design limits, e.g. available utilities). 
  • To deliver the knowledge on advanced simulation for user defined membrane unit operation applied in gas conditioning process as well as process monitoring and optimization applied in gas conditioning process (including type of feed gas, operating conditions, design parameters and configurations)

OUR TRAINERS

1. Dr Norwahyu Jusoh (UTP)

Dr Norwahyu Jusoh is an academician in Chemical Engineering department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. She is a researcher with more than 8 years in the field of CO2 capture technologies; gaining on independent research profile in membrane and adsorption techniques related to CO2 capture. To date, she has published in more than 45 leading scientific journals. 

2. Associate Professor Dr Yeong Yin Fong  (UTP)

Dr. Yeong Yin Fong is currently serving as Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. Her current research work includes synthesis and characterization of polymeric, inorganic, hybrid, and mixed matrix membranes for gas separation. To date, she has authored/co-authored more than 50 research articles in these fields.

3. Dr Serene Lock Sow Mun  (UTP)

Dr. Serene Lock Sow Mun is currently serving as a lecturer at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. Her current research work includes process and molecular simulation of polymeric, inorganic and mixed matrix membrane for contaminants removal. To date, she has authored/co-authored 35 articles in this field

4. Associate Professor Dr. Bhajan Lal Rahanu (UTP)

Dr. Bhajan Lal Rahanu, Chartered Chemist, is Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering Department and core research member of CO2 Research Centre in Institute of Contaminant Management at the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Since 2012. After receiving Ph.D. degree in 2004 from JMI Central University, New Delhi, India, Dr. Rahanu worked as postdoctoral research fellow and Research Scientist in USA, Canada, South Africa, Turkey, and Malaysia. His main areas of research interests are CO2 hydrates and their application in CCS, desalination and; Flow Assurance. He graduated 8 MSc, 8 Ph.D., 2 postdocs and more than 70 undergrads FYPI students since 2013. Dr. Rahanu has published 5 books related to the oil and gas industry, 150 peer-reviewed journal papers, 45 conference papers and 8 book chapters. (H-index 39, i-10 index 106, no of being cited 4420). Dr. Rahanu has filed 2 patents (Malaysia and Saudi Arabia) in gas hydrate-based desalination technology development. Received gold medals awards in various national as well international level exhibitions. Delivered keynotes and invited speeches (Gas Hydrate) at national as well as international conferences. In addition, as project leader, he has secured 20 gas hydrate-related research projects worth RM 3.6 million from oil and gas industries, UTP, and Malaysian Government. Secured number of sponsorships for chemical engineering department as well as for university from industry partners.

5. Dr. Chew Thiam Leng  (UTP)

Dr. Chew Thiam Leng is currently a senior lecturer in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). His research team focus on synthesis of advanced adsorbent materials and fabrication of variety types of membranes, including organic, inorganic and mixed matrix membranes. His expertise is on investigation on gas adsorption studies using different adsorbent materials and gas separation studies using different membranes. Dr. Chew Thiam Leng has more than 14 years research experience with h-index of 17.

6. Associate Professor Dr Haslinda Zabiri (UTP)

Dr Haslinda Zabiri received her PhD degree in Process Systems Engineering from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS specializing in advanced process control. Her current interests include modelling, control, monitoring and diagnostics of industrial process systems using machine learning based methods. She has developed fault detection and diagnosis techniques for monitoring industrial process control loops. She is currently an Associate Professor and the Program Manager for MSc in Process Integration (by Coursework) in Chemical Engineering Department at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.

7. Associate Professor Dr Lau Kok Keong (UTP)

Dr Lau Kok Keong is currently working as an Associate Professor at Chemical Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. His research focus in membrane technology includes numerical modelling of hollow fibre and spiral wound membrane module, molecular dynamics simulation of different types of membranes, multi-scale modelling and process simulation of membrane system, computational fluid dynamics simulation of hollow fibre and spiral wound membrane, etc.
