CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

The course aims to introduce a fundamental understanding of the characteristics of biomass resources and the design and operations of biomass energy systems. On top of that, some key topics covered include the type of energy and its feasibility for application. This course covers, energy from hydrogen, solar energy, ocean, tidal and wave energy, geothermal energy, and biomass energy.

OUR TRAINERS

1. Professor Dr. Abd. Rashid Abd. Aziz  (UTP)

Professor Dr Abd Rashid Abd Aziz marked 25 years of service at UTP in 2021. His contributions to the development of UTP has culminated in the “Outstanding Academic of the Year” award which he received during the Quality Day 2016 event. Starting as a lecturer with a fresh PhD in Mechanical Engineering (ME) from University of Miami in Florida, USA, he became the first Programme Head of Mechanical Engineering in 1999, the first Director of Green Technology MOR in 2006, the first Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research in 2011 and the first Director Institute of Transport Infrastructure in 2017. His passion since the beginning of joining UTP has always been in research.

He led UTP’s first large multi-institutional project in UTP in 2003 and subsequently formed the first research centre in UTP which he later named Centre for Automotive Research & Electric Mobility (CAREM). He has been the Head of CAREM from 2005 until 2017 and has been leading several national and international projects in internal combustion engines, alternatives fuels as well as on novel power generation involving funding to a tune of RM20M over the last two decades.

2. Professor Dr Hussain H. Jaafer Al-Kayiem (UTP)

Completed his BSc, 1973; MSc, 1981 in Mech. Eng. from the University of Baghdad. After being awarded PHD from the University of Bradford-UK 1989, he was appointed as the head of the Mech. Eng. Dept. in the Military College of Engineering – Baghdad for 1990-1997. From 1999 to 2003, he headed the Mech. Eng. Dept. in Al-Mustansirya University, Baghdad. He operated as the manager of the Netherlands Engineering Consultants, NEDECO - Iraq branch 2003-2005. Prof Hussain joined Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) in Malaysia in 2006 till recently.

As a Thermo-Fluids and Energy Technologies leader, he has published around 280 research papers, 5 books, and many chapters in books. He supervised more than 75 PG, 65 graduated, and 10 are ongoing.

Prof Hussain has been awarded at different national and international levels for his innovative achievements in the energy sector. He was awarded the Special Energy and Environment INNOVA2010 award – Brussels; and a special award from the Polish Inventor and Rationalized Institute in 2011. For his distinguished academic achievements, Prof. Hussain has conferred the ‘Eminent Scientist Award’ of Wessex Institute – the UK in 2016. And for his distinguished scientific contributions, he has been appointed as a research fellow of Wessex Institute of Technology-UK, a research fellow of Center of Excellence for Advanced Research in Fluid Flow, CARIFF-UMP and a research fellow in the Power Generation Research Centre, PGRC - UNITEN. He is an editor and editorial board member of three international journals and the Engineering journal – UTP platform editor.Recently, he is a professor of the Mech. Eng. – UTP; head of solar thermal advanced research center (STARC) and heading the Green Tech Working Group in Malaysia Education and Research Network (MYREN).

3. Associate Professor Dr. Nursyarizal Mohd Nor (UTP)

A.P. IR. DR. NURSYARIZAL MOHD NOR obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia in year 2009. In year 2001 he obtained his MSc in Electrical Power Engineering from The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), UK. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, UTP. He is Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate (PEPC) registered with Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer, Cooperate Member of Institution of Engineers Malaysia, and member of IEEE Power & Energy Society. He is also actively involved in academic accreditation exercise that conducted by Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia for all engineering, engineering technology and diploma programmes. He has published more than 100 journals, book chapters, books and conference papers at his credit. His research interests are in Power System Analysis, Power System State Estimation, Renewable Energy, Electrical Machine and Power Quality. 

4. Dr. Jundika Candra Kurnia  (UTP)

Dr Jundika is currently senior lecturer in Department of Mechanical Engineering and the head of Green Hydrogen Technology Center (GHTeC), Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. He has more than 10 years of research and development experience in the field of heat transfer enhancement and energy system. He is Chartered Engineer (CEng) with Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Senior Professional Engineer (IPM) with Institution of Engineers Indonesia, registered ASEAN Engineer and Professional Technologist (Ts) with Malaysia Board of Technologist. He obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from National University of Singapore, Bachelor of Engineering in Engineering Physics from Universitas Gadjah Mada. He has more than 100 publications in international journals and referred conferences with a high number of citations and h-index. In addition, he has extensively rendered voluntary service to the academic community as advisory board, visiting professor, invited speaker, journal guest editor, journal reviewer, conference committee and research grant reviewer

5. Ts. Dr. Lam Man Kee  (UTP)

Dr. Lam Man Kee is currently a senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering (Renewable Energy) from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2014. His research interests are in microalgae cultivation, biomass & biodiesel production, heterogeneous catalyst development, life cycle energy assessment and social-economic impact of biofuel. He has more than 10 years experiences in growing microalgae for biofuel production, as well as consultancy project with industry related to algae research. Apparently, he has published more than 100 papers in ISI/SCOPUS-indexed journals with total citations of 7573 and H-index of 38. He is currently serving as the Deputy Editor of International Journal of Biomass & Renewables (UTP Press) and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Advanced Chemical Engineering (Omics International). He also had delivered several short courses to the academic and industrial, such as “Biomass to Fuels & Chemicals”, “Reaction Engineering and LCA for Biomass Conversion”, “Academic Paper Writing in the Field of Chemical Engineering, Biomass and Biofuel”, “Cultivation of Microalgae and Larvae for Biofuel Production” and “Writing and Publishing in High Impact Journal: Tricks & Tips”.

6. Ts. Dr. Ho Yeek-Chia  (UTP)

Ho Y.C. obtained her Ph.D. (Environmental) in 2015. She has at least 15-years’ experience in academic institutions as well as industries. She is also a professional technologist in Green Technology (Ts). Currently, she is a Senior Lecturer and previously Cluster Leader for Environmental Cluster (2018-2020) in Civil & Environmental Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), and currently appointed as Programme Manager for Master in Industrial Environmental Engineering (2020 to present). Nonetheless, she is in Leadership Team under Institute of Self-Sustainable Building (ISB) as Head of Short Course Business Development (2022 to present).

YC teaches different courses which include Environmental Engineering, Sustainable Development, Sludge Management and Disposal, Wastewater Engineering, Sustainable Development for Engineer, Wastewater Treatment for Oil and Gas Industries, Environmental Hazardous Substances and Waste Management and etc.

She is currently a Secretary in International Water Association (IWA) for Design, Operation and Maintenance of Drinking Water Treatment Plants and member in The Malaysian Water Association (MWA).

Her current research interest is closely related to Environmental Engineering, specifically, Water-Food-Energy nexus. YC involved in research projects which includes renewable energy, algae harvesting, water and wastewater treatments, and life cycle assessment. She has published several works in invited review papers, invited book chapters, international conference papers and international indexed journal papers, including Bioresource Technology from Elsevier, Scientific Reports from Nature Research and a few to name. Also, YC has won a few national awards in publications and international awards for her research works, two patents and two trademarks were filed. In 2021, her innovative product has won Gold medal both in Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) and The International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX).Lastly, she has been selected to be one of the invited leaders in an Innovation Fellowships programme by Royal Academy of Engineering, UK (Year 2021). She also conducted short courses entitled “Introduction to Environmental Engineering”, “Cultivation of Microalgae and Larvae for Biofuel Production”, and “Writing and Publishing in High Impact Journal: Tricks & Tips”.
