CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

Frequency-domain analysis or Fourier analysis is a method of representing data, signals and systems as a composition of sinusoids. It has found its way into many applications in diverse areas of engineering such as signal processing, spectrography and vibration analysis. Even though Fourier analysis is a very useful tool, many find the theorem and concepts behind it to be very complex and even intimidating.

This short course attempts to elucidate some of the abstract concepts behind Fourier analysis by keeping the maths to a tolerable level without oversimplifying it. It combines both theory and practice with examples from various engineering disciplines and industries.

Apart from that, since many of the Fourier analysis are now done in computers or digital systems, the concepts and theorems related to analog-to-digital conversion will also be covered.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles behind many of the Fourier-based analysis tools used in engineering and other industries.
  • Apply the knowledge of Fourier analysis in their work.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • Anyone interested in understanding the concepts related to Fourier analysis or those who are familiar with Fourier analysis applications but want to learn about its underlying theories.

OUR TRAINERS

1. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nasreen Badruddin (UTP)

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nasreen Badruddin has more than 20 years of teaching and research experience in the area of digital signal processing, image processing and wireless communications. During her years of teaching digital signal processing students, she has observed that the biggest challenges faced by students in understanding frequency or Fourier-domain analysis is the intimidating nature of how it is being presented – in the form of complex mathematical equations and theorems.
