CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

Exploration serves as a fundamental stage of the field life cycle in the Oil and Gas Industry and also the most rewarding. However, this high reward comes with high degree of uncertainty. Misinterpretations regarding the hydrocarbon kitchen and/or charge system along with the uncertainties in hydrocarbon migration play a crucial role in exploration risking. Thus, the application of petroleum geochemistry was introduced to resolve these high uncertainties. Petroleum geochemistry is the application of organic geochemistry to study the origin, accumulation, preservation and transformation of organic matter in sediments (source rocks) to form hydrocarbons. Since the 1950’s, geochemistry-related research programs were initiated by major oil companies to gain a better understanding of oil and gas and had advance on all fronts in both conventional and unconventional plays.

This program ultimately provides a comprehensive understanding on all aspects of Organic Petrology & Geochemistry to build a career in this field specialization. Moreover, it provides a greater potential and ability to contribute to personal growth through effective feedback, thereby increasing one’s scope for career progress. It introduces a practical view involving the importance of Exploration Organic Petrology & Geochemistry in Petroleum exploration via an online mode of delivery. The attendees will learn about oil and gas, its origin, migration and preservation in the subsurface. Furthermore, the attendees will also participate in lab practical involving geochemical data analysis and interpretation (coal rank determination, petroleum source rock characterization, paleo depositional environments, oil/source rock correlations, biomarker studies, and basin modeling) along with the workflow for basin modelling utilizing real data obtained from sedimentary basins.
