CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

Core displacement test or coreflood is required to evaluate performance of injected chemicals or fluids at given pressure and temperature. The results from this test will be used to inform decisions regarding application of suitable process for near-wellbore production enhancement and improved oil recovery. The processes include matrix acidizing for carbonate and sandstone, water shutoff, sand consolidation and EOR processes such as surfactant and polymer flooding. In recent times, CO2 sequestration study also benefits from core displacement study to evaluate long term effect of CO2 injection into depleted reservoir. Early in the life of the reservoir, core displacement is used to characterize the reservoirs based on the measurement of rock properties such as porosity, permeability and relative permeability.

This course explains the fundamentals of coreflood study by introducing the participants the equipment, theory and analysis that can be performed using coreflood. The advantage of having this knowledge will help users of coreflood study to gain better insight and make informed decisions affecting the reservoir performance.

COURSE CONTENT
  • Fundamental theory of core displacement study (focusing on Darcy Law and Buckley-Leverett)
  • Design of core displacement study for applications in improved oil recovery, CO2 sequestration study, matrix stimulation and reservoir conformance
  • Analysis of core displacement results

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Design a core displacement study for specific application
  • Understand fundamental theory of core displacement
  • Analyze results of coreflood study

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • Petroleum Engineer/Manager in oil & gas who are using results from core displacement study as part of their work/business process

OUR TRAINERS

Dr Iskandar Dzulkarnain

Dr Iskandar Dzulkarnain is a faculty member in the Petroleum Engineering Department and currently head of research center COREOR (Centre for Research in Enhanced Oil Recovery) under Institute of Hydrocarbon Recovery (IHR) in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). He obtained his Ph.D in Petroleum Engineering in 2018 from Louisiana State University (LSU), USA with research in gas injection EOR, specifically on the three-phase rock and fluid interactions during Gas-Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) EOR. He also graduated with MSc in Petroleum Engineering from the joint Heriot-Watt and UTP program (2010) and Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) Electrical and Electronics Engineering from UTP in 2007. He has been teaching and conducting research related to EOR in UTP since 2010.
