INTRODUCTION
Life cycle thinking (LCT) is defined as the way of thinking that includes the economic, environmental, and social consequences of a product or process throughout its life. Arising from this, Life cycle assessment (LCA) is one of the most comprehensive tools used in quantifying impacts of products or systems over a range of environmental and resource issues.
This course is designed to give an essential overview of life cycle assessment methodology as well as how to apply them in business context. It will help you to interpret and evaluate LCA studies and to understand the strengths and weaknesses of LCA.
Part 1: Life Cycle Thinking and Value to Business
Part 2: Methodology on Life Cycle Assessment
Part 3: Practical Session – LCA Modelling
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
1. Dr Letchumi Thannimalay
Dr. Letchumi Thannimalay received her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from University Malaya focusing on the Life Cycle Assessment for the management of chemicals in Malaysia. She also holds a master’s degree in Medical Science on Risk Assessment of Bisphenol A. Dr. Letchumi has been in PETRONAS for 7 years and currently is leading the Product Risk Management team under Group Health Safety and Environment in PETRONAS. Prior to joining PETRONAS, she was attached to the Standards & Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) as the Head of Hazard Management, at the Environmental Technology Centre at the Standards & Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM). Apart from that, she is also a registered Chemist A.M.I.C with Institute Kimia Malaysia since 1995.
Dr. Letchumi has been in the industry for more than 30 years, providing expertise in areas of; environmental toxicology and chemical safety specializing in risk assessment and risk management, exposure modeling for human health and environment, occupational safety practices such as preparation of Safety Data Sheet and classification of chemical products according to GHS/CLASS regulation.
Since 2013, Dr. Letchumi has been actively publishing technical papers on the field of Life Cycle. She also presented findings at Life Cycle Initiative and JRC Workshop on LCA Databases in France. She was noted as the key person in steering the National Project on Life Cycle Assessment which primarily focuses on the development of life cycle inventories for materials and products unique to Malaysia's economic sectors. Besides that, her major involvement in the eco-design of products and processes to address concerns of climate change, resource scarcity, and continual degradation of the environment, must be acknowledged as well.
Currently, she is mainly involved in driving the aspect of life cycle assessment in PETRONAS. She has successfully led her team to complete 113 Life Cycle Assessment studies within the span of four years (2019-2022), for the businesses of PETRONAS; upstream, downstream, and gas. Besides that, she is currently involved in the establishment of Ecolabel Type II for PETRONAS products, shaping alternative fuels such as Lower carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF) and Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), as well as researching on low carbon hydrogen and low carbon crude.
2. Dr Chai
Yee Ho
Dr. Chai Yee Ho is currently a lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. He has more than 25 publications and with a h-index of 13 and citation of 589.
He was shortlisted as the Finalist for the Young Scientist Network – Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN- ASM) Chrysalis Award in 2020. He was a visiting Research Scientist to University of York, UK in 2019 to collaborate and explore in the field of microwave-assisted extraction technology. His current research interests cater to supercritical fluid extraction technology, solventless microwave extraction technology, and life cycle assessment (LCA) with high research interests to valorise biomass wastes into value-added products.
He is also affiliated to several professional associations, including IChemE (Chartered Engineer), Malaysia Board of Technologist (Graduate Technologist), and Board of Engineers Malaysia (Graduate Engineer).
3. Ts Dr Ho Yeek Chia
4. Poh
Chin Hui
Chin Hui has more than 12-year of working experience in climate change and sustainability, from her consulting and corporate experience. Currently serves as the Manager of Product Risk Management under PETRONAS’ Group Health, Safety and Environment Department. The Team’s main role is to ensure product risks are well managed and strengthen public trust in PETRONAS products, while currently focusing on evaluating environmental impacts associated of a product via Life Cycle Assessment (ISO14044/67).
She is a Chemical with Environmental Engineer who graduated from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom in 2009. She completed her Master degree in Corporate Environmental Management from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom in 2010.
Prior joining PETRONAS, Chin Hui served as the Associate Director under the Sustainability Services advisory team of KPMG Malaysia. She is also the sole technical advisor in climate change for KPMG Malaysia. Chin Hui was responsible in project implementation and business development on climate-related projects, such as GHG management, decarbonization strategy, implementation of Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), sustainability assurance. She was also responsible in the capacity building on climate change management for KPMG Malaysia.
On the corporate sustainability and sustainability reporting aspects, Chin Hui is professionally trained and competent with the application of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Reporting Guidelines. She involved and supported several sustainability reports for Malaysian GLCs. Chin Hui was also involved in the development of the CSR strategy for an international integrated hospitality company.
