CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

In the first two decades of the 21st century, tall building construction around the globe has seen a significant rise. The modern tall building design has achieved new records in reaching the height of the building; a 1 km (1000 m) tall building is already a reality. Now engineers are striving to increase the tallness further. Behind the success of achieving the tallness of the current building, the role of digital technologies is quite essential. In this respect, Building Information Modeling or BIM is emerging as a powerful tool that enables structural engineers to develop the most innovative and robust structural system for a given project. BIM is not a software or a project management tool. Instead, it provides an integrated platform in a coordinated virtual environment that enables architects, engineers, and constructors to visualize concepts of the respective discipline in a virtual model. This course is designed to further develop civil and structural engineering skills towards understanding the fundamentals of BIM and its application in the structural system selection of tall buildings. Some real case studies of the recent design tall building projects using BIM will also be discussed.
