CONTENT SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

The course provides a theoretical basis for numerical simulation of fluid flow in porous media with focus on petroleum reservoirs. The partial differential equations required for single-phase and multi-phase fluid flow in porous media will be developed for constant and variable grid blocks. Moreover, numerical methods for solving the equations using finite difference methods will be covered. Programming exercise are integrated in this course. The practical aspects of reservoir simulation to the forefront will be presented. Topics such as data analysis, model construction, history matching, and forecasting are discussed. Introduction to compositional and fractured reservoir simulations will be highlighted followed by a brief discussion on application of machine learning to facilitate numerical computations.

COURSE CONTENT
  • Introduction to reservoir simulation
  • Derivation and Discretization of Fluid Flow in porous media: Explicit, IMPES and Implicit Formulations
  • Representing Sources and Sinks in Reservoir Simulation Models
  • Direct and Indirect Solution of Sets of Linear and Nonlinear Equations
  • Full Field Reservoir Simulations: Setting Objective to Running Prediction Cases.
  • Introduction to Compositional and Fractured Reservoir Simulations, Application of Machine Learning Concepts to Facilitate Numerical Simulations.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Develop the governing partial differential equations for single and multiphase fluid flow in porous media.
  • Select solution methods and analyze the errors, assumptions, and benefits of these methods.
  • Realize the process of defining study objectives, gathering, and analyzing data, constructing the reservoir simulation model, history matching the simulation model, running prediction cases, and reporting.
  • Identify application areas of machine learning in reservoir simulation.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • A reservoir engineer or who aspire to become one or simply develop skills in reservoir engineering
  • Anyone who wonders how finite reservoir simulators work and want to improve understanding of reservoir simulation
