COURSE SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

The course will cover the basic principles of the adsorption separation process and a brief overview of representative industrial processes. This course is divided into three (3) main topics: the introduction of adsorption process, characteristics of adsorbents for water pollutants, and removal of water pollutants by adsorption process from the industry perspective.

The adsorption process is a part of separation due to the adhesion of one or more components on solid sorbents. It has been used in the tertiary treatment in water treatment, gas separation, and ion exchange. Desorption the act of purifying solid adsorbent for another cycle of adsorption and often conducted with the presence of desorbent, change in temperature or change in pressure.

The relationship between the properties of the adsorbent and the process applications will be emphasized in the second part of the course. Adsorbent particles are very porous in structure with many fine pores. Some of the examples of commercialized adsorbents are activated carbon, silica gel, silica gel, molecular sieve zeolites, synthetic polymers or resin. The factor influencing the adsorption process including the initial concentration of adsorbate, pH and temperature will be explained in details.

Adsorption process is crucial in waste water treatment process as it is stipulated in Environment Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009. This regulations governs the design, operation, reporting and performance monitoring of waste industrial effluent treatment system. Failure to operate unit process within industrial effluent treatment system can lead to pollution to water body such as rivers and lakes, thus threatening the aquatic organism and also drinking water supply.

There are others regulation regarding use of adsorbent in treatment plant such as Environmental Quality (Sewage) Regulations 2009, Environmental Quality (Control of Pollution From Solid Waste Transfer Station And Landfill) Regulations 2009 and Environment Quality (Scheduled Waste) Regulations 2005.

This course will present an overview on the role of adsorption process in the removing water pollutants from water bodies. It describes the principles of adsorption process, adsorbent selection and factors influencing the process. Isotherm, kinetics and material balance for batch process will also be included in the course delivery. Case study will be used to enhance tha participants’ understanding in evaluating the adsorption process and interpretating adsorption data.
